Dear Clients:
The positive feedback we received on our Social Media customer conference we held in New England on September 8, 2010, prompted us to take the topic a step further.
"I think your presentation on Wednesday was excellent and informative and I am glad I attended. It was very clear that you had put a lot of time and effort into the subject matter and the presentation materials. My customers who attended said it was well worth the early morning drive. I think it would be a great idea to leverage the value of this presentation to even more customers in a webinar."
-- Fred Dean, Director, Software Services

Business Intelligence - What You Should Know
Forrester Research, released a white paper recently on Lean Business Intelligence. The paper is a well-constructed document which will give you much to think about as it makes the case for why and how enterprises are moving to self-service business intelligence.
Knowledge workers have become adept at navigating through software solutions, they want to do their own research and analysis without neceaarily going through an IT department.
Here are 7 key steps to follow when you're evaluating a business intelligence solution:
-
Spend time BEFORE the implementation to review all your data, scrub it and make sure it is near perfect.
-
Identify the users who will be using that system and plan plenty of training, close to the deployment day. We have too often seen companies plan the training in conjunction with the planning, which leads to users finally getting their hands on the software 2 months after their training. Please don't do that!
-
Accept that there will be tweaks to the system once you get more familiar with it. So deploy it as quickly as you can, and tweak as you go. You won't get it 'perfect' before you start using it.
-
Make sure that your critical applications will be integrated with your business intelligence solution from the beginning.
-
Set clear goals, measurable goals at the onset of your project. It's the only way you'll be able to demonstrate the ROI.
-
With so much talk about the technology, remember, it's acutally not about the technology: it's about your business objectives. Make sure that all the BI work that you do results in tangible benefits for your business.
-
Finally, don't get talked into business intelligence without having thoroughly vetted your needs, objectives and aligned your stakeholders with your business strategies = get information to the right users, at the right time, to enable better decision making at all levels of the organization.
With BI, you get an accurate view of costs, liabilities, risks, customer behavior, supplier reliability, and you get access to the links between these data points. By the way, for a very good overview of BI, check out this CIO site.

Human Resources Management - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
What differentiates a good HR department from a not-so-good HR department? I asked Arlie Skory, Human Resources Specialist from Skory Employer Solutions, what she thought were the keys to a successful Human Resources Management Department in an organization.
Arlie suggested that developing the art of compromise was one of the most critical skills a Human Resource Manager could develop.
"As an HR professional, your responsibilities span many areas in the corporation... "Businesses need a partner, not an iconoclast in the role of an "enforcer". Be an advocate and advisor for your discipline, but remain a part of the team" said Arlie Skory.
I did a little more research on successful HR departments, and found some great insight in The HR Daily Advisor . In one of their blog posts they outlined nine skills they felt were essential skills an HR manager must have to be successful on the job.
Here is a summary of the Human Resource Manager's skills for success:
Multitasking - Priorities and business needs move fast and change fast. You must be able to handle it all, all at once.
Discretion and Business Ethics - Human Resources professionals are the conscience of the company, as well as the keepers of confidential information. As you serve the needs of top management, you also monitor officers’ approaches to employees to ensure proper ethics are observed...
